when someone is knocked on the head from behind, how do they pass out. is it lack of blood supply etc?

You see it on the telly but never understood the 'mechanics' of it or is it just something to look good on telly.

The simple action is that your brain moves backwards/forwards within your skull as it reverberates in response to the impact. This causes twisting/flexion/extension in the brainstem (of the reticular activating system). The reticular activating system is what regulates wakefulness/consciousness. It is not due to lack of blood supply.
