My 91 Honda Accord speedometer randomly stops working, and my sport light starts blinking...?

On very hot days my speedometer will stop working, sometime temporarily for a few minutes, a few seconds, a lot of the time it starts back on its own, and maybe the sports light will start flashing, when that happens it tends to make my driving really sluggish. Then I have to turn the car completely off and restart it, and it's fine. But it's starting to happen more and more often, and nothing will resolve it some days, and the engine light has been coming on at lower speeds, 0-40mphs, a long with my water rising. But goes off when I get on the freeway, 45+mph.. I've checked all my fluids changed my oil and filter. No resolve.

I had the same exact problem. Whenever you go slow the car does not want to go and after 45+ mile it was fine. It is EGR valve. You have a vacuum problem. The valve gets stuck and too much air goes in the motor causing missfire. It works with TPS (throttle positioning sensor) therefore if you want to get rid of your S light to go off take of your TPS cable. It will make your car shift late but temporarily solve the problem. EGR valve is pretty expensive for what it does. Around $175 i think it was. Good luck.

91 Honda Accord Speedometer Not Working

  • 1 decade ago

It sounds like you have a electrical problem very common in those years. With the speed sounds like you have a short. Check the voltage with a volts meter. It also could be a short in the wires or in side cluster gauges or speed sensor mine did the same thing. But the check engine will tell you what is wrong. You need to pull the engine code and there is you problem.
