PCI-E 2.0 expands the bandwidth to allow the PCI-E bus to handle twice the data as earlier motherboards formatted for the PCI-E video bus. If your going to spend the money on video cards, make sure the motherboard supports PCI-E 2.0. Otherwise you will not be running the video cards to their fullest potential and your wasting money. While there are a few things you can skimp on when building a computer, the motherboard is not it. Yes, to get the support you need you will have to spend a little extra on the motherboard. But in the end, you will be glad you did. If you already have the motherboard, don't even waste your time getting a PCI-E slotted card with 2.0 support. Sure, it will work, but again a waste of resources. The link provided below is an example of a standard PCI card that will perform nicely with earlier motherboards and it will best any 9600 series cards on the market. The 9600 series is just a mid-range video card. Any 8800 series card will provide better overall performance.

Lowest price for the 8600GT is $59, and the 9500GT is $69 with a $25 mail-in-rebate. If you don't trust rebates, then the 9500GT can be purchased for $65. I believe these two cards should be very similar performance-wise.

Edit: Oops! Didn't realize there were DDR2 variants.

As for the 8800GS AKA 9600GSO, if you're going to spend 85$, there are several cards in the price range. The 9600GT (94$) is probably the best. The 9600GSO (85$) and the HD4670 (80$) are not quite as good, but should be just about on par with eachother. Any of these cards will perform far better than the 9500GT or 8600GS.

@Mawduce - The 8800GTS is a great card, but the performance increase over the 9600GT is probably no more than 20%. At double the cost, it doesn't make sense. If you were going to look into the 180-200$ price point, the HD4850 or 9800GTX+ easily outperform the 8800GTS and even slightly outperform the 8800GTX. Probably the best bang for the buck of all of the mid-range cards, though, is the 8800GT. At $111 it performs only slightly worse than the 8800GTS.

And the 9600GT > 8800GS. The 9600GT isn't similar to the 8600GT. Check out the benchmarks. Among sub-100$ cards, the 9600GT is tops. The only thing that detracts from it is the fact that for another 15-20$ you can grab the 8800GT, which is quite a bit better.

Yes its backwards compatable. It will go into that mobo no probs.

the 9500GT gddr3 is a better card than an 8600gt not by much though.

avoid the gddr2 variant of either card.

    9500gt gddr3 512meg is $79.99

    8600gt gddr3 oc 256 meg is $69.99

    8600gt gddr3 512meg is $77.99

BUT the 8800GS 384meg gddr3 is only $84.99 and is the pick of the bunch.
