Democrats...and Republicans. Why are you Democrats or Republicans?

I was a Republican for many years without really knowing why. When I first thought about, I realized it was because my parents were Republican.

But, when I studied the Republican ideals, I found I couldn't agree with them. So, I turned Democrat. (This was long before the Independents came along as a viable party).

So, just out of curiosity, why are you Democrat or Republican?

Thanks for any and all serious answers.

Update:

A lot of answers so far, but not many saying why. Why are you Democrat, Republican, Independent, Socialist, or whatever?

I, too, grew up as a republican. As I got older and realized the differences in the parties, I switched.

Why am I democrat? Because I believe that ALL people are equal. I believe that if two gay people are in love and want to get married, then they should be permitted to do so. It's not a lifestyle choice. It's who they are and they shouldn't have to suffer because of it. I just realize that by letting them get married..it in no way affects me. If God has an issue with, HE will deal with it when the time comes. It's not for me to judge and deny the rights of others.

I also realized that the republican party did not have my interests at heart as a middle class citizen. They favor the wealthy. Not helpful to me at all.

I also am pro-choice. I believe it's better to have an abortion than it is to give birth to an unwanted child and leave it to die in a dumpster or wrapped tightly in a blanket in a hidden spot somewhere, left to smother. I also believe that there are medical purposes in which an abortion may be needed. I don't agree that it should be used as a form of birth control because you are too lazy or too stupid to use protection. I am smart enough to realize that even the most diligent women get pregnant because no birth control is 100% effective (besides a hysterectomy).

I believe in the death penalty. IF there is substantial evidence to ensure that an innocent person isn't going to die.

Those are the main reasons I'm a Democrat.

Source(s): Haha...I love the person who says they are voting for Palin. Hello? You are voting for McCain. Palin isn't running for President. Duh.

I am an independent, in the military and will be voting for Obama.

I will vote Democrat because I believe that we need a drastic change and an opportunity to re-build this country and allow the world to see that we chose change and not continue the same bully politics.

I believe in defending the constitution of the United States of America and our freedom. I know a lot of the people in the military believe that the Republicans can do that better, but I tend to disagree. Just look at our current situation, broken down economy, no foreign policy, a war with no objective, growing unemployment, etc…

    OBAMA 2008!!!

My parents always said that they were independent and believed in the universality of crooked politicians. I'm a chip off the old block, but I have never voted for a Republican. I have voted for Libertarians a couple of times and I voted for Ross Perot, but never a neocon. Their economic ideas are lunacy and they always try to legislate morality. Now they seem to love war as well. Because they are so popular, I've felt that I've needed to vote Democrat until a viable third party comes on the scene to rescue us.

At first, I never paid attention to the parties but the principle and ideas of the candidates. Now that I think about it, I'm a democrat because I would rather have a government where the voices of the people are actually heard instead of voting for a leader that "represents us" however he/she pleases and abuses the power. I believe that republican is the the rule of the elites (who make up less thatn 10% of the country or so), therefore I come to the conclusion that they don't have the interests of the majority in mind.

I agree that parents are a big influence. I think religion is a huge influence too. Most Catholics I know are Republicans. But also location, income, and race are factors too.

I'm a democrat because I agree with there polices most of the time.

I agree with a lot of liberal ideas, like a lot of young people. Age makes a big difference.

I really believe in life the most important thing is how we behave not what happens. We can't control everything that happens only how we treat people & what we choose to do. I think democrats choose to treat people as they would want to be treated. I think loving thy neighbor as thyself means you wouldn't go to war unless it was the last choice in the world. I have seen republicans who are mean spirited & competitive in ways that hurt people & I would rather lose then win at all costs...I do have wonderful friends who are repeblicans because of not knowing about politics but being surrounded by pushing repbulicans. I have a friend who is a republican because her grandfather was one but she is 76 yrs.old & probably doesn't know that when Lincoln was a republican that was what it was called but it has changed around since then. I also have 2 lovely friends who are repbulicans because of pushy husbands one is married to a gun fanatic & the other to a Rush Limbaugh type. I got to spiritual center & know the nicest people from there & most of them are democrats because we believe in loving people & wholistic living...I am an obsessive researcher & their is such a huge difference in the parties there is no way I have anything in common with republicans....I was also poor when I was younger & understand what it is like to struggle finacially & republicans in the white house steal for their friends so they all owe each other favors which is so corrupt. I care about everyone having a fair chance at living their potential & think it is beneficial for us all when everyone is living a healthy functioning life.

I am an Independent. I don't even know what, if any, party my parents supported. They voted every year though, but I think they made their choices based on the people running and what they espoused rather than toeing a party line.

I am a disappointed Republican? I agree with their foreign policy and econ plan for the most part because I believe all men are created equal but it is up to you to do the rest. I am pro choice and pro lgbt. so I am disappointed in my party for being so traditional socially

I believe in the people. I believe in helping those who aren't able to help themselves. I believe that, as long as it doesn't harm anyone else, do what makes you happy. I believe our first priority, globally, should be to protect ourselves. I believe free speech includes things that some may find offensive. I believe that progress is the path to the future. I believe education should be the single greatest expence of any government. I believe that if a person is sick, they should be able to walk into a hosiptal and be cared for.

I don't know what that makes me, I don't care. You stand for all of those things and you get my vote.

I care about 95% of America. This is 285 Million ppl. We are the ones that make 15 Million ppl cannot make 15 Million pple RICH! WE DID! But they want us to bail them out when they get all they can get and when they can't get MORE THAN THEY DID LAST YEAR then they want us to BAIL THEM OUT. IT HAPPENS EVERYTIME THE REPUBLICANS ARE IN.

You are only as strong as the weakest link. You can only separate and make each side strong when you give to the richest & powerful.
