In Louisiana you have 2 options for home schooling. One is basically working with the school you have to have your child tested and follow a school approved curricula (Abeka) Option 2 is a private school. All you do is send a letter to the department of education in Baton Rouge and go for it. You can use the curriculum you want and there is no testing. The only requirements is that you teach the Federalization Papers and the Declaration of Independence and that the child is in attendance for 180 days. You can find the laws at http://www.hslda.org/

If you are anywhere near St Tammany parish you can join the St Tammany HEA for a home school group it costs like 30.00 to join and has about 200 families in it.

If you would like I can send you a copy of the letter to send to BR and the address. All you will have to do is fill in the blanks and mail it in. You can email me through YA with your address and I will send it right away.

It's not hard to do. We pulled our kids out about 2 years ago and have been doing it in La since. My kids are 4th grade, 1st grade and 2 years old. I suggest looking at Sonlight if you want to do most of the teaching or K12 if you want something on line. Any other questions feel free to email me at any time.

Hi there...I hope that I can be of help to you...to calm you at least, a little.

Making the decision to homeschool has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.I am homeschooling my 8 year old son and pulled him out of school. I suggest you immediately go to www.HSLDA.org and do exactly what they tell you to do. They will show you the current, most up to date, home schooling laws for Louisiana.

Afterward, if you know anyone at all that is homeschooling, set up a time to meet with them, if they are friendly, at their home. You will want to look at the way they homeschool, what curriculum they use, their style, and it will help you frame the way you will teach your 6th grader.

All the while, read. Read and research online. Ask questions to people who know what they are talking about so the uninformed people won't discourage you.

    I hope I've helped you a little.

Oh, the curriculum I suggest is Sonlight. Excellent program with lots of support.

    Happy Homeschooling!

contact the school board office or the school. if you don't understand something, you're the teacher and have to explain it. how can you teach your child if you don't know the stuff that needs to be taught? maybe you could enroll the child in a church school or find another parent that can teach. home schooling parents usually have regular meetings.
