If every American bought a 3 million dollar home, it's only 1 billion. So where do they get 700 billion?

Supposedly, the bulk of these bad investments involve mortgages packaged together and sold to investors. The U.S. population is about 300 million people. If every one of them bought a 3 million dollar home and defaulted, it's 900 million. Add in investor profit at 100 percent and it's 1.8 billion. So where does it jump to 700 billion?

    300 million * 3 million is 900 trillion, not 900 million.

More realistically, there are about 100 million households in the U.S. Let's say half of them own a home (I have no idea what the number is to be honest, but it seems realistic). So that's 50 million homeowners. If the average home is $200,000, and 7% of them defaulted, that would be $700 billion.

Your math is way off. One billion equals 1,000 million. If every person bought a 3 million home and defaulted the loss would be 900 billion.

    300,000,000 x 3,000,000 = 900,000,000,000,000 = 0.9 trillion

oh, okay, that's pretty close to the 1 or 2 trillion or more the bailout will probably actually cost. The difference will go to the guys who brought this bailout problem on us.

It isn't nearly as much as the recession we're going to be in whether we let the bailout farce go through, or not. The resulting loss of value of the dollar to us all when it crashes? That value will go into thin air.

    you're doing the wrong math here. (300 mil people ) * ($ 3mil), not 3 mil people time 3.

another note: 700 billion divided to 300 mil people, each should get around $2300.
