How is the secretary of state selected?

    If you mean the US Secretary of State, then the president.

    If you mean the Secretary of State for an individual state in the United States (California, Texas, etc.), those are usually elected positions and, therefore, chosen by the voters of the specific state.

    Like all members of the Cabinet, she/he is selected by the President.
