Be safe, not sorry. You have the answer where to find the defrag program. You should consider booting into safe mode and defrag from there. Make sure nothing is running down in the lower right hand corner. No firewall or anything and temporarily disconnet the internet cable.
But the choice of how you do this is really up to you.

If you are using Windows XP, you can go to My Computer, right click on the drive you want to defragment, click on properties on the menu, and then click on the Tools tab at the top of the new window. There you will find an option to defragment, and it is generally advised you let it finish defragmenting without stopping the process.

Double click on My Computer > Highlight a Hard Disk which you want to defrag > Right click on the highlighted driver > Click properties > Click on the tools tab > Defragment now.

To defragment your pc, open your start up Menu, click on All classes/classes, then upload-ons, then device approaches, then Disk Defragmenter. in case you have homestead windows XP or Vista, you could click on study, and it will inform you in case you could desire to defragment or no longer. If it says which you do no longer would desire to defragment at this quantity, you could the two do it, or no longer. If it says which you will desire to defragment, then defragment. you could view the record of your disk defragment on the top of the defragmentation.

go to control panel ---> classic view ---> double click on disk defragmenter. a new window opens. this is the disk defragmenter of windows. its not that good. you better get a 3rd party software for defragmenting your hard disks like diskeeper.

Another step if ever you find this easier would be: Start>Programs>Accessories>System tools>Disk Defragmenter
