What is this pain and is it serious?

I've been having this pain in differing areas of my chest for a couple of months now. Sometimes it's in the dead center where my breastbone is, and other times it's around my ribs. It's a very sharp pain, like someone is stabbing a large pin into my chest, and it will only last for a couple of days, and then it will go away for a few weeks before coming back again. I know it's not gas and I'm too young for a heart attack, so what is it? And it's really starting to worry me, so is it serious?

Update:

And I'm 16 if that helps anyone

It may be growing pains, depending on how old you are, or it could be muscle pain from pulls. It sounds muscular not cardiac in nature. Try taking some ibuprofen or tylenol and see if that helps reduce the pain.

You can have heart ailments at any age. How do you know that it isn't gas? I used to get gas pockets around my heart as a child, and had to do exercises to alleviate them. It sounds a lot like gas pockets to me, but they say that heart attacks sometimes masquerade as indigestion. Sometimes problems in the esophagus cause sharp pains. If it is enough to worry you, you may want to see a physician or the school nurse. Take care and don't wait too long.
