My dad was born Oct. 26, 1936 and I'm looking for memorabilia from that year.?
I'm going nuts trying to find info. I know that Tom Mix was popular and that was the year the Mars bar was invented. The number one song was "The Way You Look Tonight" by Fred Astaire. I would like to find a newspaper from that month or even that year, but I can no longer find the website that offers them. Anyone have any info on popular toys/books from that era? Actually, 1936 to 1946 would work. I'm putting together a special "memory box" for my dad and am filling it with items from his childhood. I hope to bring back some great memories. Thanks so much for any help you can provide! Search your memories! Grill your relatives! Save me!
P.S. Already bought a cool program called "The Year You Were Born" but it doesn't help enough. It's really neat, though.
Wow. I'm not the only one looking for answers. Was going to reply privately to Ss S, but thought some of you may enjoy the following link:
I'm actually trying to create a base so I can buy the actual articles of memorabilia for my dad's birthday. At my parents' ages, they certainly don't need stuff, so I'm trying to find things they won't normally take the time to look for. I'm shooting for nostalgia here and am hoping to take my dad back in time.

Well have you checked the newspapers from that time period? or other publications? You have to go to the Archives section of the library. You can also go to the library and look at history. The Great Depression started in 1928. My dad was born in 1935. Museums have good archive sections too and carry photos from periods of time. 1942 - 1946 was the second world war. Alot of people served time and the army websites show the battles that went on and some of the bigger news from the wars.
Source(s): To be honest Id love to know what you come up with because my dad is from teh same era and I am doign a geneology project. In the baby pictures, they are basically sitting by a woodshed. Did they have a radio? a TV? He lived on a farm. I think their biggest entertainment was some kind of cub scouts that his big brother went to. - Joyce BLv 71 decade ago
Go on Ebay and look for 1836 stuff. There is a good chance you can find a license plate or magazine from 1936.
I have found several that I have given as gifts.
But if you really want to take him back, look for boys magazines from the forties and early fifties. Anything about the end of WW2. National Geographic magazines from that era.
Cars from the late forties and early fifties. That is the stuff guys would swoon over.
God luck and have fun
