A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle
A Wind in the Door by Madeline L'Engle
A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeline L'Engle
Many Waters by Madeline L'Engle
An Acceptable Time by Madeline L'Engle
(I'm about 90% sure I put those in order...these books are amazing, definately check them out! They're sort of a mixture between Sci-Fi/Fantasy, but they don't suck like most, haha.)

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede. The series consists of four novels:
1. Dealing with Dragons
2. Searching for Dragons
3. Calling on Dragons
4. Talking with Dragons
The books are fantasy, with good adventure and plenty of humor. I read the series again about every two years. I know it's a good series for young people because I was student teaching in an 8th grade class when I discovered it. Some of the students recommended it. But so far all the adults I have recommended it to have also enjoyed the novels.
You can get your friend the first book and if she likes it, you can give her the others someday.

Sue Grafton writes crime drama with a Female lead who has gumption and spunk. Starts with "A is for Alibi" and goes from there. They are all easy reads, but fun to read. Plus, I think Kinsey (the main character) is a great female strength role model.

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
plot summary:
Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school . . . again. No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he's not even sure he believes himself.
Until the Minotaur chases him to summer camp.
Suddenly, mythical creatures seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. The gods of Mount Olympus, he's coming to realize, are very much alive in the twenty-first century. And worse, he's angered a few of them: Zeus's master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.
Now Percy has just ten days to find and return Zeus's stolen property, and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. On a daring road trip from their summer camp in New York to the gates of the Underworld in Los Angeles, Percy and his friends–one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena–will face a host of enemies determined to stop them. To succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of failure and betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.
Leonardo's Shadow by Christopher Grey

Milan, 1497. The height of the Renaissance. And for young Giacomo, servant to the famous Leonardo da Vinci, it’s the most difficult time of all. His master has been working on the Last Supper, his greatest painting ever, for the past two years. But has he finished it? He’s barely started! And the all-powerful Duke of Milan is after the artist to have it done by the time of the Pope’s visit next Easter. If Leonardo won’t hurry up, however, there’s a rumor that a young genius — Michelangelo — may be invited to finish it instead. Which means that Leonardo won’t be paid, and his debts are now so large that Milan’s shopkeepers are planning drastic measures against him.
It’s all down to Giacomo, and whether he can come up with a brilliant solution. But will his Master go for it? After all, Leonardo still doesn’t seem to trust him. He refuses to teach Giacomo how to paint, and he does not offer to help him find his true parents, or to explain the significance of the medallion, ring, and cross that he was carrying when Leonardo saved his life. But with the secret arrival of a powerful stranger, Giacomo is about to discover much more than the ans
