One great example would be ethanol that is produced from corn. If we are to use this ethanol as a renewable source, the land it is planted on would be used for energy instead of food production. This can deplete nutrients in the soil, and erode the land. You'll probably hear about this in your debate. As it is such a big mistake to utilize as a renewable energy source.

Other renewable energy ... solar is clean ... wind is clean ... water is clean ... magnets are clean ... gravity is clean

I wish your question was the negative impact it has on SOCIETY, as I can go into further detail with that, but not specifically the environment. As in our day and age renewable energy is considered the LEAST harmful to the environment. Batteries not included ...

solar energy ... requires a variety of elements to create the solar panel. A rise in solar energy production will result in more mining. Mining can disturb natural habitats above the surface as well as "erode" and simply break up the land.

Wind energy ... wood, plastic, metal. Again, more resource gathering. Cutting down trees, mining for aluminum, and plastic is not biodegradeable.

However the difference between the negative factors above and a nuclear power plant are one and the same. Mining and manufacturing will need to be done for both. Except nuclear waste is very bad to the environment, coal and other burning (like oil, a trash incinerator, or burning wood to heat your home) pollutes the air.

Im not happy with that debate question you have. They really should have asked how it is bad for society or how it will have an impact on it. How it is bad for the environment though? No different than any other energy production methods we have used over the years as far as mining and manufacturing which are the only environmental cuplrits in my view. And if you must include batteries ... the acid can be dangerous, along with the ? fumes it gives off. You may also want to say that electricity itself is bad for the environment as the electromagnetic field is a thousand times more greater than what our bodies are capable of dealing with. Exposure to this radiation is likely the leading cause to many cancers as well as brain diseases.

Well fossil fuels are renewable, but they take such a long time to renew that the consequneces of using them are what we have to deal with now. With all the rest, it depends on the environmental consequences of the method concerned. Most of the wind turbines people fit to their homes cost more energy to make (and cause pollution) than they will recoup. Big projects like the proposed severn barrier woudl have to balance the effects of the huge amount of environmentally damaging concrete with the energy produced.

There is a step-by-step video guide online right now that can show you how to reduce your power bill by making your own solar panels.

Take a look at it: http://tinyurl.com/Earth4EnergyRew

Why pay thousands of dollars for solar energy ($27,000 average cost) when you can build your own solar panel system for just a fraction of the retail cost. You can build a single solar panel or you can build an entire array of panels to power your whole house.

Some people are saving 50% on their power bill, some people are reducing their bill to nothing. But what’s most impressive is that just by following these instructions some are even making the power company pay them!

Renewable energy is bad because the workers at the utility companies would not get overtime to sit around and do nothing because less homes would be dependent upon the utility companies. So there would be less overtime for the workers, possible layoffs and more home owners being less dependent on the utility company.

Embedded energy would be worth searching for. Hydro electric is not a good way of producing electricity. Vast amounts of cement which has proper high embedded energy and covers lots of fertile land which put food prices up, gets more virgin land put under the plough and increases transportation costs(?).

You got a tough one there, GL.

Hydro destroys habitats by damning them

Wind costs lots of money to build, can break, can kill birds.

Solar can cause fire and is expensive to build.

You pay for energy one way or another.

What do they use to make windmills?

Oil is cheaply gotten not too terribly invasive and can be made more efficient. Plus we have all the infrastructure to use it and we can make it cleaner.

It makes no difference . The real energy comes from the burning of C. Sorry but fossil fuel is a renewable source of energy. Our present supply of fossil fuels came from plants and they will continue. We will never run out as long as there are plants and CO2 for them to recycle.
