Is 10 Ball catching on at local levels?

With the World 10 Ball Championships going on, I figured I'd ask how many people out there play the game. For those unfamiliar with it, it's a rotation game with 10 balls (duh), similar to 9 ball. Some of the key rule differences I could find are: 1. It's call ball and pocket and 2. If player A pockets the legal ball on a called safety, player B has the option of taking the shot or passing it back.

I've never played it myself. I think it was introduced because the soft break in 9 ball was making it too predictable. I like the rule changes though. I think it's growing among the pro tournaments, but I haven't seen any trickle down, maybe because the lack of media coverage and 9 ball is hard enough for the above average banger.

Update:

And what do you guys think about the different rules from 9 ball? I know I've lost a decent number of games to lower level opponents due to slop, but I've also won my fair share.

I've never played 10 Ball. I have seen it played via televised coverage.

No one in my area plays 10 Ball.

Regarding the different rules from 9 Ball :

I don't like the "slop" aspect of 9 Ball. I'd like to see 9 Ball become a 'call-shot' game as a general rule. Ultimately, I'd like to see 9 Ball adopt the rules of 10 Ball. Initially, Texas Express' non-called pocketed balls staying pocketed rule of 9 Ball, was adopted for TV, to keep the viewer interested and to quicken the game(s) allowing for more air-time. While the game does move along quicker, I see it as a "game-kill". I'd like to see a player win a game or a match with skill and great execution ..... not by the large margin of luck that the game of 9 Ball carries. Of course, a bit of luck will always remain a factor in cue sports, just as it does in most every sport.

10 Ball is a game preferred by pros or top level players because it takes away the huge advantage a great break has in 9 Ball. Less balls made on the break, more traffic on the table with the 10 balls, makes for more all around skill and strategy. For amateurs it doesn't really make much of a difference and they're probably better off playing 9 Ball as they are not a threat to run multiple racks on a regular basis and the game will move along quicker.

No. it will never catch on at an amateur level, 9 balls popularity has been around for years, that will not change, 10 ball has picked up slightly in popularity in recent years at the elite level of the game, due to the fact that presents more of a challenge to run consecutive racks.

I've played it on occasion, beleve it or not one ball does make the table more cluttered and harder to run out.

all in all, it will never surpass 9-ball in popularty.

I've played it a few times in ring games, but other then that I never see anyone playing it much. Its a good change up from 9 ball now and then.
