Why is my daughter developing an over-bite?

My daughter has always had a really nice smile and not much of an over-bite. But recently she has started to develop a bad over-bite, to the point that her lips don't always close over her front teeth. Has anyone else had this happen to their child or to themselves? She does have a dental appointment tomorrow, I was just wondering if this is something common for kids or if this is unusual. By the way, my daughter is almost 9 years old.

Update:

Nope, she never sucked her thumb at all and she has no habits that involve her mouth, like chewing on pencils and stuff like that.

yeah it is commen, by daughter had perfect teeth and then developed an overbite at 11, she had to have braces and a thing called a retainer which pushed her bottom teeth forward and her top teeth back. it looked quite uncomfortable to wear but after a couple of months her over bite had gone. Good Luck!

Does she suck her thumb? Or any habits involving her jaw, like chewing lots of gum or playing an instrument?

I had a bad overbite after years of sucking my thumb... 2 surgeries fixed it.

I didn't always have one myself. They didn't know where it came from. My brother was born with a cleft palate, so they think it may be hereditary. My half sister has one from sucking her thumb, but I never did that. They told me the only way they could fix it was to do surgery and move everything back. I said no thanks!!! But mine isn't noticable unless I show someone.

Is she a thumb sucker? That moves teeth tremendously in children.
