Is being called a liberal an insult?

Seems like Democrats don't like it. Why?

1. Technically, someone who falls to the left in a political system, who believes in government programs (healthcare is a good example, as is welfare) and a larger scope of government, also favors monitoring of business and protection of constitutional rights. Someone who believes that the federal government should have more importance than state government, http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=lib...

Is that wrong? It seems correct to me.

Update:

I haven't heard of any republicans thinking that it's an insult..only democrats that got offended. I'm just curious, cause I don't know.

Update 2:

Scythian..I won't even go there sorry, because I'm sure our opinions differ there. If you are religious then think about the things that are right and wrong, and that should answer that.

Update 3:

What is right and wrong in the bible?

Liberals hate the word. They want to be known as "progressives" Liberals feel, they don't think. They always say "I feel" Watch there stand on issues. There stand has two requirements. 1. It has to make you feel good. 2. Right or wrong it has to be fair. Liberals are embarassed by the word, more than insulted by it.

It's most definitely a compliment. I chuckle when someone tries to use it in a negative context.

It's like saying, "You intellectual asshole."

it incredibly relies upon on what area your one. traditionally, liberals are for greater government and greater gov't spending. Conservatives are for much less government and tax cuts. That being stated, the conservatives for the duration of the final 8 years have acted as liberals could via spending spending spending and advertising tax cuts. yet how are you able to spend without money? to that end the clarification for our staggering debt. So once you're a republican, and called a liberal to that end you're insulted. yet somewhat thats what theyve been for the duration of the final 8 years and have been given us into the economic mess

I think it depends on who is using the term. With regards to your first edit, some people who answered here have said they mean it as an insult. And they sound like they'll vote republican. Adding that it is synonymous with baby killer is editing the dictionary. There is a person using it as an insult. I'd say that's your answer. Nobody likes a bully who changes it's meaning and uses it as an insult.

At one time, being thought as a "liberal" was a compliment, synonymous with "progressive". In the 4 decades since the LB Johnson years, it has become a reviled word, and the term "conservative" rose to respectibility. Remember Barry Goldwater? At the time he was laughed as a paleolithic conservative. Times have changed.

Well, times are still changing. With the collapse of Wall Street and growing discreditization of conservative "totally free market theory", we could see a reversal of roles. Stay tuned.

I do have a question for you, would Jesus today be considerd a liberal or a conservative?

  • 1 decade ago

It depends on who's saying it and in what context.

If someone called me a liberal, I would know that they are an educated person who knows that words have precise meanings. That is because I am a liberal in the old and proper usage, someone who believes in individual liberty without governmental interference. The word is misused today to apply to people who support excessive socialist programs; that would be an insult.

I don't think it's a good idea to mix politics and religion.

    Personally, I'm a conservative. I can't stand liberals.

But I refuse to mix politics and religion.

for the record, most Christian evangelicals usually vote Republican in elections.

I believe this is more accurate definition.

    Modern Liberalism

The definition of liberal can be divided into 6 key principles:

    Belief in positive law

    Faith in utopianism

    Preference for equality over liberty

Belief in the benevolence of government and individuals

Belief in the perfectibility of human beings

    Belief in the communal state

Liberals seem to make decisions based on emotion not logic, I would be insulted.

It's definitely an insult guys. To most moderates and conservatives it has come to mean "a bleeding-heart, give-me-a-handout (or bailout), punish success (over tax those who profit from their ingenuity), stagnate ingenuity, government-control freak".
