Yeah. It's a tough one to get through. It does get better as the novel progresses, though. once you're about half through you should be alright.
What helped me was noticing all the love interests/triangles and how they fluctuated throughout the story. It's also interesting to watch Carrie's rise as Hurstwood falls. lol sorry, its the best I can do
