american rat terrier's were specially bred for this, jack russel terrier would also be an option. mind you if you've never had a dog befor their a big responsibility for 1 mouse, if your not up for the walks, feeding, bathing, playing with it id suggest buying some mouse traps.

I don't know about dogs but buy some sticky traps and put them along the baseboards of your house. Somewhere the kids can't get to them. Get the sticky traps that have a nice pool of glue on them not the ones that have lines of glue. Finally bait them with peanut butter. No matter what you know or heard cheese doesn't work also cheese dries too fast. Peanut butter has aroma that mice/rats can't ignore and it stays good for days. I bet if you do have mice/rats you will catch them within the first two days. Good Luck

What about just setting a trap? Put it somewhere the kids can't get it.

Staffies are phenominal mousers, I have one. Have also heard that Jack russells are good, but have nothing to back that up.
