How do you replace the lower unit on a 40 hp Evinrude Lark III?
We have an antique speed boat with a modified 40hp Evinrude Lark III outboard engine. Recently, we exploded the transfer gears on the prop shaft and bent the shift fork and blew holes in the foot from inside out. I was able to score a perfect lower unit on Ebay, complete with oil transfer tubes input shaft, shifter rod...The comlete assembly. But even though I am a mechanic, I'm not a BOAT mechanic, and I have never attempted anything of this nature on this type of engine, and do not own a repair/service manual for it. Does anyone out there have knowledge of the exact, step by step proceedure for this replacement? And if you actually own a manual, and could possibly scan the pages covering this proceedure and e-mail them to LesPaul681@yahoo.com then that would be PERFECT. Thanks to the entire Yahoo Answers community in advance for you help. In the past, I've helped guys change engines and transmissions in their cars, and replace head gaskets and timing chains. I figure if I can do that, then surely someone can help me with this project, and maybe my wife and I can complete it this weekend and get the boat back on the lake before Alcoa drains it for the winter.
Regards,
Paul

need to know the year.
we can cross reference the model number, should be on the port side mounting bracket. also on a quarter-sized freeze plug somewhere on the powerhead.
Highly recommend asking this question on the johnnyrude forum over at http://forums.iboats.com/ -- lot of knowledge over there.
