What is China like after the Olympics? safe?

Will China be a good place to visit for an extended trip (about a month) after the Olympics? What happens to cities after they host, do they become safer or more dangerous?

China is the safest country I've ever been to.

In Australia you need to worry about safety a lot more than you do in China. I walk on my own here in China at night and have never had a problem. (2 years - but still, don't walk alone at night in any country)

nanren88 is 100% correct about the traffic, it's not bad driving, it's different driving. When a person beeps the horn at me my first thought is they are advising me to be prepared for their appearance, not that's the driver is angry at me. Simply step out of the path of the car.

Chinese drivers are very skilled drivers, I know I'm not a confident enough driver to drive here, but that's my problem, not theirs. Thankfully there is plenty of price effective public transport to accomodate to my needs. A nice (often full - of fun? or people?) bus.

Either way, watch your wallet, things can get stolen, so back pockets are not recommended, zippers are good too.

Remember when you buy things that if you later find a cheaper price, the person did not cheat you, you agreed to the price at the time.

    That is just good business.

    Enjoy your trip to China.

Safe, yes, compared to most countries, China is very safe.

The population is large, of course there are some with extreme views & some crime, but the rates are low.

Regarding the traffic comment by another, I hear people say this a lot. I have visited China many times & I have never really had a problem with the traffic. (I visit large cities)

The thing about the traffic, is that it is different. If you expect Western road rules & Western conventions, then, yes it will seem chaotic. If you instead realise that it is YOU who is the one out of place & attempt to just get the traffic, then you will see the patterns of behaviour & it becomes much more comfortable.

Where I live, if I walk out on the road, other than at a crossing, cars will, & have, yelled at me "You're not on a crossing". The chance of being hit is high, as the drivers are not prepared for people crossing without avoiding the cars. In China, my impression is that the drivers DO expect people & other cars to appear in front of them. They are prepared to avoid: That's part of driving, not something to shout about. I suspect that if I were to walk without watching traffic, I'd be safe in China than a heavily regulated Western country, as the driver are prepared for such. So, be careful of traffic, but in my opinion, traffic too is safer in China.

once you are going to a super city in China, threat is you would be completely advantageous. each and all the riots in China so a ways have been in components that are distant and undesirable. This final rebel grew to become into in Southern China, a ways removed from Beijing, even nonetheless it grew to become into additionally in a undesirable area of China. besides, you'll be in Beijing, the capital. it somewhat is heavily guarded via the government, and the government is doing each little thing it could to be certain all vacationers could have the suited journey attainable. i could say that it somewhat is possibly safer now than it incredibly is often, that's already relatively risk-free. in case you won't question going to long island city, then you definately shouldn't question going to China.

Its still very dangerous because of the way cars drive. There are no rules, no crossing places and no police to enforce anything on road. During OLympics it was safer as cars were banned on cettain days in Beijing. China is a very safe country unless you go on the road or pavements. Its worse than India and thats bad. For example if I stand still on a pedestrian cossing with the green man telling me to cross cars will drive atr me. I have to jump around them. They do not avoid or try to avoid me, I know. I have tried stopping on them. Cars will just hit you and continue.
