Certificate attesting your Christianity?

My mum is a one of a wedding sponsor and the presiding priest requested all sponsor should present certificate attesting they are catholic from their respective parishes. Not all require this though in weddings only at a certain area I wish not to disclose.

What do you think of that?

Update:

Its not the birth certificate the priest is asking,

a certificate that says you are a catholic you because , i guess only catholic can be a major sponsor at the wedding. Also getting one from the parishes requires the one who get it to be interviewed.

... yep its required.. they need to verify how much contributions you had given for the last ten years.. if they put you on the very last seat.. you'll know that you're not a good catholic..

Must be a pre Vatican II priest, letter of the law Catholic. Probably part of a wealthy parish with many members. Not surprised.
