What are your thoughts on lap band surgery?

A friend of mine (who is a hypochondriac) is going to have lap band surgery. I think she deliberately got obese so that she could "go under the knife". She is lazy, eats all the fatty foods and drinks sugar laced drinks. I hope the surgery lifts her self esteem. I don't think she realises that there'll be no more parties where she can drink until 3 or 4am. And there goes that daily carton of iced coffee. Perhaps she will take up excercise on the equipment that sits collecting dust.

Before most surgeons perform any type of obesity surgery, the patient must undergo counseling and education to prepare the patient for the drastic life-style changes he or she will have to make. The surgeon wants the surgery to be success full and select candidates carefully

My husband is having the surgery on Tuesday. He has had to drink liquids and protein shakes for the past 2 weeks. (In order to shrink the liver before surgery). It has not been easy, but he is making a commitment, if she can go 2 weeks of liquids and protein shakes she SHOULD be OK. She needs to try that first... with the OK from a doctor first. After the surgery, he will be on CLEAR liquids for a week then liquid and protein shakes for 2 more weeks. Then he will get to start blended foods... that can take up to 3 more weeks...

does your friend know all of this?

My uncle had lap band surgery.

Although it does work, and weight is lost rapidly, it's very restrictive.

There's only a certain amount your body can hold, and there is a lot of puking involved.

Also, you can't have carbonated drinks for the rest of your life.

Burping is common after every meal. Not just one burp, but a whole series of nasty smelling burps that may last for a full half hour.

So yes, it works, and yes, if you're friend is EXTREMELY overweight, then I would recommend it.

But, it'll make living life the "fun way" almost out of the question.

Good luck to you and your friend.

I hope she knows what she's really getting herself into. The lap band is a tool, and it's not that hard to beat if she wants to. Sounds like she needs counseling to me!

She also needs support. It sounds to me that you might be a bit judgmental.. and this will be a tough time for her behaviorally. She may slip, and will need a cheerleader, not a critic.
