how do you watermark digital photos?

I took some pictures for someone's wedding and they are paying for them. i wanted to put all of them on a cd so they can choose which ones they want, but i dont want them to have them printed themselves. how do i watermark or copyright the files so that they can not be printed by anyone but me?

Update:

I want to sell them prints, and if i don't watermark them there would be no reason why they wouldnt be able to have prints made for themselves, thats why i was trying to do it, that way i can sell them a package.

You need a program such PSP (Paint Shop Pro) or Photoshop or Roxio Photo Suite and use the "add text" feature then tweak the transparency to make it more or less sheer.

The easiest way to do it, would be to resize the images so they are fine to view on the computer screen, but if they tried to print them - they wouldn't print well at all.

Also, in any photo editing program, you should be able to add text to the image, so perhaps put "(C) John Smith. For Copies Please Call ..........."

Put it across the middle of the image, but perhaps lower the opacity a little so that they can still see what the picture looks like. If you don't have a photo editing program, there is a free one called GIMP available.

I believe there is a way to embed the watermarks into a file but I'm not sure how to do that.

    Edit:

Gimp is a program that is similar to programs like Photoshop - There are people who can achieve the same product from using GIMP as those who use a 'paid' program.

You can download GIMP for free at www.gimp.org.

There are likely tutorials on the internet if you cannot figure out how to use it but if you're using it for touchups and adding watermarks, then it should be just what you need and there is no reason to go out and buy a whole new program.

Source(s): Have used Gimp and Photoshop.

I use AiS Watermark Pictures Protector for adding customized visible watermarks on my images before publishing:

I use Batch Watermark Creator. I like it because if I am only watermarking and resizing, I can do the entire folder at once. Saves tons of time.

    You can find it here,

I always watermark my images- mostly for fun.

You can do it on http://www.picnik.com/ , go to abc text, and add your little watermark. And example of Picnik's work, from an image i took:

    http://flickr.com/photos/27145979@N02/2855269132/

Then, simply Resave them on your computer. Who would re-print them? if you aren't posting them on the internet, and The Bride and Groom aren't putting them on the internet, there's no chance for them to be printed. Right?
