puppy getting neutered?

My 6mos mini dachshund is going to get neutered in 2 wks.. He still seems like a baby but he's at the right age.

I was wondering what a neutering recovery would be like? Does he wear one of those conehead things to keep from licking himself? What will he act like afterwards? Will he be bleeding? Is there something I should be doing like special foods or decrease his activity level while he's recovering?

thanx, its my 1st dog

He will have to wear one " Cone Head " to aid the healing process. Because it is natural for any dog no matter what gender to lick a wound, its an ancestral thing. At first your dog will be gloomy SEEMINGLY depressed but this is a temporary process. Although it is recommended to play with him as much as you can to lift his spirit. No he will not be bleeding, but if the " Cone Head " is removed early and he licks a little to much this will cause the wound to reopen causing him to bleed out, which is why the " Cone " was created. At first he will eat a special mix of food to aid healing, and possibly to accelerate his metabolism ( which will speed up healing a little ) so it is important that he is well fed and watered. It has been proven that Male dogs do DECREASE in aggressiveness once neutered, with Females its the opposite. This is the only mental / physical change a dog goes through.. Although beware every dog is different, so it may need some more food or a little less food, a little less healing time or a little more. So it can't be certain whether or not it will take less or more time, or anything else. It is best that you follow your Veterinarian's Orders on any restrictions or limitations.

    HOPE HE FEELS BETTER! :D

When I got my little guy neutered, he did not have to wear the conehead thing. He was a little groggy afterwards, and that night we still limited food and water, just a little at a time to make sure he didn't get sick. But by the next day, he was back to his normal, happy, playful self. You do need to make sure to keep him from jumping or going up and down stairs for about a week though. Good for you for being responsible with your dog.

    Take care!

Neutering really isn't a big deal and recovery is pretty quick. He won't be bleeding and he doesn't need any special foods. You should keep the cone on him until his stitches come out whenever you can't watch him because the incision gets really itchy when it's healing and if he rips out those stitches it means he'll need re-suturing. When you're watching him, take it off to give him a break.

As for his activity level, he can go for walks, but you need to keep him from jumping so he doesn't tear out the stitches. Don't worry, the vet's office will give you detailed instructions when you bring him home.

Most males recover quickly within a day or two. He will be alittle groggy for about a day after the surgury from the anasthesia. Feed him small amounts of food and water when you first bring him home.

He will only need the cone if he's bothering the incision site.. small amounts of licking are ok, as long as he's not itching, licking constantly, pulling or biting at the site.

Small amounts of bleeding are normal and ok... my boy didnt have any bleeding at all after his neuter.

Nothing special you need to do unless reccommended by your vet.. he will send you home with a care sheet to inform you of what to do and what to look for.

Yes he will need to wear a cone on head, they are called e-collars. You veterinarian will probably recommend he wears it for approximately 10 days depending how the surgery site was closed (glue, sutures, staples). The day he comes out of surgery you will want to feed only a light meal and then continue to feed normally. While he will probably act like his ld self even the day he comes out of surgery it is important to limit his activity, short leash walks and not letting him jump up is recommended. Typically there is no bleeding and you can barely see the incision site. watch for redness, swelling and discharge at the incision site as that can be a sign of infection. In rare cases the scrotal sac can fill with blood but that is typically only seen in adult dogs that are neutered and even then treatment for it is rarely indicated. Speak to your veterinarian about preanesthetic blood work IV catheter and IV fluids to make surgery go as smooth as possible and to make recovery go as smooth and quickly as possible ask about antibiotics and pain medication post op.

Your vet will be more than happy to answer all of your questions. Every dog is different. His reaction to the surgery depends on how old he is, his temperament, and his breed, etc. Thank you for neutering!

the dog will get a conie/satalite dish. =] they might bleed after the cone comes off bc she might itch it alot but thats oky. if it gets raw take him back to the vets. he might calm down after the surgey and might not act like a baby baby
