Good Books for 13-year-old Girl?
My daughter's 13th birthday is coming up and she loves to read. I'm trying to find new titles and series titles that she would love. She's not into the Twilight series, but she loved Harry Potter. She's read the series by Louise Rennison and loved that as well. She likes The Cheetah Girl movies but didn't care for the books. She read the Alice series and loved those too.Of course she is addicted to HSM and The Jonas Brothers, if that helps. I'm just trying to compose a list of titles that I would purchase for her. Giving her a gift cards for books won't help because she will stay in the store for hours and won't choose anything for herself but she loves when I recommend titles. The problem is I'm out of suggestions. She's read the Little House series as well. She didn't like the American Girl's books and really doesn't care for the Baby Sitter's Club. So can anyone offer any suggestions? African American authors would be a plus but as you can see we're open to any authors because we both read a lot!
Thanks in advance!
I completely forgot about VC Andrews. Yes I read them all myself. I'm not too worried about the incest thing because she hears worse stuff on the nightly news.
She did like the Sisterhood movies, and she has a copy of the first book on her shelf. I asked her about and she said she would get to it eventually. So I guess it's not one she's dying to read.
Yes she has read all Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary books. She started those in second grade.

If she likes Louise Rennison she'll probably like "Girl, 15, charming but insane" by Sue Limb or One of the books by Jacqueline Wilson (Tracy Beaker, Lola Rose, Candyfloss etc)
She may like books by Malorie Blackman. A great series by her is the Naughts and Crosses series.
Maybe she'd like a book by Darren Shan? He writes a great series that starts with "Cirque du Freak". I read them when I was your daughter's age. They are a little scary as they are about vampires, but they're not too long and there are several in the series so when she finishes one she can just walk into the book shop and pick up another!
She might like the goosebumps books. They're not too scary but talk about things coming to life etc etc.
I'm about a year older than your daughter and these are all books that I like to read or have read.
Hope I helped and I hope she has a very happy birthday!

If she enjoyed Harry Potter then she may enjoy The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. Meg Cabot has quite a few books for girls that age that are good, including The Princess Diaries series, among others. My 13 year old daughter also really enjoyed the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. Along the magic/fantasy line again, she may enjoy the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer , The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black or the Inheritance cycle (Eragon, Eldest and Brisingr) by Christopher Paolini.
(regarding the VC Andrews books, I know that the Flowers in the Attic series contains incest, so unless you are buying books specifically marketed for her age group, you may want to preview them personally before you turn her loose with them)

I’m a big Harry Potter fan too!
I love A Series of Unfortunate Events! You can get them individually or the box set http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Wreck-Unfortunate-E...
Has she read any Christopher Paolini? She might like Eragon and his others.
I loved Judy Blume as a kid. Not sure how kids today would feel about her. How to Eat Fried Worms, Blubber, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. Those were what got me started loving to read!
She may also like Tolkien’s (The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings) series.
Glad to hear young kids today have a love for reading!

wow looks like this question is from eight years ago but I'm still gonna answer. I recommend the book If I Stay. That book came out when I was 13 years old. It was the best book !

You might want to look at Tamora Pierce writer of the Magic Circle series and The Song of the Lioness quartets are both very well written and many fans that enjoy Harry Potter enjoy them as well.

Have you tried the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson? A lot of young teens have enjoyed these books - and so have adults. (Although adults, if you're not familiar with Patterson, are more into his detective series, such as myself.) At any rate, Maximum Ride begins with "Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment" and make for entertaining reads.

Although I'm a little older than your daughter, I must say that I very much enjoyed the Clique series. It's about upper class teens your daughter's age. And although they are upper class the events are very real and readers are able to connect to the story. Hope this was of help :]

i dont know about the other books but since harry potter is about magic and what not, maybe you should try to get her into moer fantasy books. I read alot of the fantasy books mainly in long series but here are a few classics some are not easy reading though so are about 800 pages.
1) lord of the rings - pretty much started modern fantasy
2) the wayfer redemption series - i believe sara adams or sara douglas wrote it both good writters
3) the saga of seven suns - a sapce opera which is a space fantasy.
none of these book are hard to read but also each of these series is about 6-8 books long and each book is around 400-700 pages.
