Pitiful Laptop Audio levels...wtf?

So my girlfriends computer audio is pitiful for no reason we can determine. At its loudest, it is slightly quieter than a normal conversation.

Sound otherwise seems to be normal. What should we investigate/alter/download etc. to be able to actually hear quiet youtube videos? Or watch a movie on it without subtitles?

    I bet it's an Acer? ... only option is to get yourself a set of external speakers
