My parakeet is staying fluffy and has labored breathing, what is wrong?
My parakeet is about 5 years old. Just about 5 days ago he started staying fluffy with his wings dropped to his side. I noticed today that his breathing is a bit labored and he isn't very talkative. There are no vets in my area that deal with birds. Does this behavior sound like something that I could treat on my own by picking up some Medicine at the local pet store? Should I separate him from the other bird in the cage? Any help would be great!! Thanks,

Get him into a much warmer room right away. Avoid treating with medicine. Yes, seperate him right away. But also get any other birds into a warmer room with no drafts as well. He will be in a sad state if he gets wobbly on his perch or if his tail twitches up and down. For now he seems to have an upper respiratory illness which may have been brought on by a draft or a cold room or he may have gotten in a fight and ended up under the weather. The other bird may also be controlling the food or water dish so he may be malnourished. Adding drops of meds to the water could make him not like the taste and refuse to drink and force-feeding him meds is very frightening for a small bird. Remember, budgies come from a land where the temp is very hot so 10 days in a 90 degree space is a good treatment. You could use a heat lamp or a "hotbox". Be very very careful to keep plenty of water available. It dries up quick in a hot place.

Get him away from other birds. Put in a room by himself maybe leave radio on for company. Warm him up. I find the best way to treat things like this is by putting a heating pad set on low underneath the outside of the bottom of cage and covering cage halfway. Sick birds cannot regulate their body temps. Also a warm mist humidifier help with the breathing issue. Keep out of drafts. Can try over the counter meds but most of time do not work and can make sicker sometimes. I would call around and see if there are any vets in area that would see your bird or at least be willing to treat.

What do you many times feed them? do you be responsive to if this poultry is eating? you are the superb option in thinking that the poultry ought to be considered by the vet. Staying on the backside of the cage would properly be a elementary sign of ailment, and the circling is on no account typical. Get him to the surgeon. good success.
