I have a friend who has been employed with the same boss for 4 years. Today, her boss accused her of theft. ?

Her boss had no clue what might have been taken, but another worker had told the boss about Her taking something from the shop (salon). Upon this public questioning, she saw some garbage bags in the car and said those were her (the boss) My friend (female) stated she bought those bags herself. The boss stated she wanted proof (receipt). Well, I just faxed the receipt to the shop, but I do not like the idea of my friend being humiliated in public like that. To be accused of pilfridge is discriminating because in my opinion, since my friend is Hispanic and the other worker and the boss are West Los Angeles White folk, she should be able to lodge a complaint against them for false accusations, defamation of character or something. Especially discrimination. There are better and brighter ways of handling this matter and harrassing one in public is not one of them. The boss should have pulled my friend to the side and talked to her, if she chose to take matters further once told about the alleged theft. Does any one know where I can locate such information regarding filing a complaint against an employer for such things as theft from the shop. The boss actually wanted to see the receipt for the bags. I say, I want to see HER receipt. I have our proof and my friend sure won't feel comfortable when she returns to work, now. Not since she was on public display today. Help.

It would seem that an apology is in order as you have supplied the receipt. That would be the least I would expect. How to get it is the question. It should really be offered freely by her boss without having to ask for it. See what happens when your friend returns to work. It's not a huge thing - even though, as you say, it was kind of in public - but after 4 years it seems very petty to be getting upset over a few lousy garbage bags. No apology - look for another job if she can. You could try and get a legal opinion if it really hurt her that much.

Tell her boss we all think she's an ***. On second thought....don't do that!

~something is up. The person worked for this boss for 4 years and had no problems in the past of this nature and all the sudden, the boss wants to accuse?? Tell your friend to start looking for another job asap. She will never be happy there again with a boss who makes these kinds of accusations. As for the legalities of it all, I would just let it go. It will cost a lot in court and you probably wont win.~

Why is it that you think this is discrimination? I am probably going to be flamed for this. But I am sick and tired of minorities claiming discrimination simply because they are a minority.

Discrimination occurs when one person treats another differently *because* of the person's race (or gender or sexuality or whatever). Simply having two people of two races who disagree or dislike each other...that's not discrimination.

If you encourage your friend to lodge a complaint BECAUSE HER BOSS IS WHITE, then guess what that is? Discrimination!

Your friend's boss sounds like a jerk. But why are you so intimately involved in this whole situation? Step back. Take a breath. Grab the classified ads and help your friend redo her resume. Don't be Al Sharpton.
