    DEATH MAGNETIC REVIEW

    Personally... I love it.

I am glad I bought it.

I loved how it combined Elements from ALL the Metallica Eras (Judas Kiss still has a bit of a St Anger feel, End of the Line & Broken, Beat and Scarred have some of the feel of the Load/Reload era), and yet seemed to focus them with the hardness of the Justice/Black era.

Is it MoP or RTL? Nope. And it certainly isn't KTA (which I appreciate but feel is way overrated)... it is it's own, modern offering, but it showcases some great riffs, solos and songwriting. Rob on Bass is wonderful (different from Cliff true, but still great), and Lars rediscovered his second kick drum. All good things. The only "negative" is occassionally James' voice...but since he actually blew his vocal chords out on the Black album, those will never be quite the same.

I am very happy with it. Broken Beat &Scarred, and All Nightmare Long are standouts to me, and really, Cyanide or End of the Line, IMO is the weakest track... and I still like it. The last time Metallica put out an album I actually liked every track was Black. Load til now has been very hit and miss.

It is certainly not perfect, I forget which track I was listening to last night ( Might have been Juda's Kiss ) where they totally changed up the time signature for the last 1/2 to third of the song, kinda like they were trying to do breakdowns..and It didn't work so well ( just like several of their St Anger tracks veered badly off course when they started going into multiple weird time signatures in each track) . But aside from that?

    WIN.

Thank You Metallica for restoring this longtime fan's faith.

Track 1: That Was Just Your Life.

Absolutely love this intro. Heartbeat to a nice guitar part..slow and atmospheric. Then Lars starts in with the drums which let you know it is about to kick you in the face. Nice little signature James back sweep in the riff starting at about 1:30. Really love the pacing of the vocals. Great solo from Kirk at 4:50... Grade:8.5

Track 2: The End of the Line:

Don't like the weird intro to be honest. Song would have been fine (better IMO ) without the first 20-40 seconds. At 40 seconds I like the new riff. the change in time signature at 2:16 is a little too reminiscent of St Anger. Honestly, this is likely the least impressive track on the album. (not Cyanide as a I previously said) The super slow tempo part before the end is a stretch. Grade:6.5

Track 3: Broken, Beat and Scarred.

Possibly my favorite Track on the album. Another throw away intro for the first 17 seconds..but then a nice build up on the rhythm leading to the main riff and melody of the song. Not Thrashy, but has a nice sound, consistent and has a deceptive speed in the rhythm guitar. I really like the lyrics, and the pacing. The chorus kicks in at about 2 minutes and is where the song really gets kinda anthemic. I love that part. And Lars finally remembered he has TWO kick drums. Grade:9

Track 4: The Day That Never Comes

Their first single. Nice melodic piece, that jams hard on the back side. The initial melody and chorus reminds me heavily of the Unforgiven 2 actually, which is why I initially mistook thei for the Unforgiven 3. Very suitable vocals to the subject matter (which to me appear to be more about an abusive relationship and self deception than anything to do with a war, but.. whatever) I like the Rhythm throughout the early part of the song. The change up at about 3:50 is sweet and definitely more of their older style... thrashy and in your face. picks up the pace at 5 minutes a lot like One. Grade:9

    Track 5: All Nightmare Long.

Really like the opening drums and Bassline on this one. Sets up the song nicely. then at just before 40 seconds it really kicks into high gear. Nice main riff. One of the most consistent tracks on the album. Grade : 8

    Track 6: Cyanide

This one is growing on me. I was kinda turned off thanks to "Vulturous" (the early versions they played in Seoul). Yet another odd intro. That might be my most consistent gripe on this album. But it does turn into a nice bass line quick, so I will deal with it. Some of the more intrigueing lyrics on the album. the main riff is very odd, but it grows on me. Nice Chorus. Grade: 7.5-8

    Track 7: the Unforgiven III

I was counting on hating this one. And aside from lyrics about forgiveness, and a tempo similiar to the other Unforgivens... I really don't know why this is a Part 3. But, whatever the reasoning, I actually like this track. The intro is actually quite pretty with the piano and strings. and the opening guitar melody blends into it quite nicely. Grade:8

    Track 8: the Juda's Kiss:

Nice intro. Strange transition to the main riff at about 30 seconds but good. Lyrics are good, the style is limited by the damage James did to his throat years ago. Love the chorus. Good fast riffing. The bridge from 3:50 to about4:25 seems a little forced. decent solo. Grade:8

    Track 9: Suicide and Redemption:

Instrumental. Another good intro, like the beefy bassline. Nice way the intro builds up, Lars sets a nice structure with his drums. The main riff that starts at about 55 seconds is reminiscent of something from Reload, but sounds good. There is a bit of a Bluesy Southern Rock feel. Very nice lead guitar part starting at 3:50. Actually puts me in mind of Nightwish. Another nice transition at about 5:25. Really solid piece, but it lacks the poignancy and punch of pieces like Call of Ktulu or Orion. Grade: 8

    Track 10: My Apocolypse.

Intro kinda puts me in mind of Megadeth. I like James harsher vocals in this. Has a lot of Thrashiness to the riff and galloping drums. Nice solo starting at 2:25...reminiscent of one of Kirk's other... can't call to mind which. What's up with the Russian Polka riff at 2:55 I am not sure. Last 30 seconds definitely brings to mind Dyers Eve or Dmg Inc. Grade:8.5

So I give the album an overall grade of 8-8.5. No its not the best they have offered, but it is very solid, and very Metallica

Its you eh what u doing here ? :)

I am really impressed with the album. I wasn't expecting much, because new albums from some older bands were kinda disapointing. But I love how they put in some heavy metal like in All Nightmare Long, Cyanide. It has some new stuff, like The Day that Never Comes. It is a really great album - overall.

I thought it was going to be another St. Anger, but I was wrong. It is a great album. They brought back the true thrash metal and got some new songs. I just love The Day That Never Comes. I would buy it if I were you.

    Crapola

under produced HORRIBLE MIX JOB AWFUL half@ssed effort after I got over my bitterness of the whole Napster GREED whining of Lars and the last 5 albums of SELL OUT GARBAGE I took a listen a couple times maybe last week opened my heart and mind a little bit to come to find out its CRAPOLA ANYWAY, Well you know what? its got a couple moments here and there it really does better than their last 5 records or 4 of Garbage ESPECIALLY ST. ANGER that is CRAP at its finest I would rather listen to any SLIPKNOT any day

  • 1 decade ago

better than what i expected but after a while gets boring which i find hard for metallica to do... but they definitely made the album get boring after a while

  • 1 decade ago

better than some of their other stuff but not nearly as good as the early music. Metallicas reign is over... :(
