With RAYS you get double entendre. Rays as in 'sea animal' and Rays as in 'soaking Florida Rays' and Rays as in 'Rays of hope'.
I like it.

When they were going to become a team in 1998, there was a contest to name them and it was narrowed down to Devil Rays or Manta Rays, and Devil Rays won. Then in November 2007, Stuart Sternberg, the majority owner decided to give the Rays a new face and drop it from Devil Rays to the Rays. Though it's probably more of a coincidence, after the name change, the Rays have a spring in their step this year.

It's long and wordy and awkward like Devil rays was.
Tampa Bay Rays rolls off the tongue more smoothly.

Unfortunately they aren't even an animal anymore. They are a "Ray of sunshine." Should have stayed the animal in some sort of way.
