Really either one is good but if you are going to stay in the virgin islands I would stay on St. John if you like peace and quiet specifically Caneel Bay or the Westin. If you like more of a city feel I would stay on St. Thomas, the only problem is that St Thomas is a Cruise ship port and it kinda revolves around that so if there are no Cruise Ships then most of the City is shut down. Also keep in mind that there is no tax in the U.S.V.I and if you are american you will not need a passport to travel there.

I have not had the pleasure of visiting the South Pacific. However, I lived in the United States Virgin Islands and can speak to its positives:
If you are a US citizens US Virgin Islands is under the same flag and provides amenities, protections, currency and banks as if you were in the homeland. You can make calls without foreign charges and see a US post office.
The beaches are rated some of the best. With the diving spectacular.
Another feature of the Virgin Islands is how easy it is to leave it. You can see many other islands from its sure and visit the British Virgin Island with a quick ferry ride.
I am scheduled to make a trip this winter. And may go yachting between the islands in late December. This in itself is such a value.

Virgin Island. More accesible to North American airports, and you can go to Old San Juan for the weekends. The South Pacific is good if you want to write a book.
