There were hundreds, even thousands of bands and songs that were popular. Which really means its a personal preference to what the "Greatest Songs of the 80's" were.

However, these were my favorite bands:

    2. Van Halen

    3. Journey

    4. The Eagles

    5. Metallica

    6. Heart

    7. Michael Jackson (Yes he was EXTREMELY popular =D)

    8. Guns N' Roses

    9. Aerosmith

    10. Don Henley (Solo)

    11. Brian Adams

You know, when I take trivia quizzes about 80s music, my score is so bad that I wonder if I slept through the entire decade.

But here's a link of top hits according to Billboard for the entire decade. And I know I've heard almost all these songs. Looks like Phil Collins and Michael Jackson were the biggest players for the decade as a whole.

    Great question!

Milli Vanilli - Blame it on the rain

Madonna - True blue and a list of others

I was young in the 80's I could hook you up with some 90's songs and groups.

Van Halen, Billy Idol, Cindi Lauper, U2, Pink Floyd, INXS, The Police, David Bowie, lots and lots of stuff.

The mainstream was O.K., but the stuff happening under that was much better:

The Cure, The Smiths, Joy Division/New Order, ...

This is speaking from the viewpoint of an English-speaking Westerner.
