Places to visit in York City Centre at the end of the month?

I'm heading down to York with my father {don't ask} for a couple of days at the end of the month. We won't have a car, and are staying reasonably close to the Minster. Can anyone recommend attractions, places to eat, etc. that will be open then. Particularly things that may be unlisted in a brief guide.

I'm in my forties, he's in this seventies so you can discount anything unsuitable for the old and confused..

I love York and one of its assets is that it has something to offer everyone. You haven't mentioned your Dad's interests.

Would the National Railway museum be his thing, for example? It's free and even if you don't like trains, you'll find it engaging.

There's about 10 museums in York: the Castle folk museum - as a senior gentleman does your Dad like to reminisce over household items he once used? It's one of York's most visited.

Or the two National trust houses in the centre - see what eccentric Frank Green got up to in the treasurer's' house.

There's around 17 medieval churches and the Minster, the County Museum featuring a ruined abbey in lovely gardens, and two of the city gates have museums. Your Dad might find access to them and the walls a bit harder but if he is able, I recommend the walls walk.

Experience Saxon smells and models in Jorvik or Medieval splendour at the Merchant Adventurers Hall. Or the museum of Automata; Clifford's Tower; The Convent Bar Museum?

I love York as a city just to be in, to wander and browse the fantastic shops and cafes, many of whom are unique to this beautiful city.

I like the Jarrold City More Than A Guide to York, which is around £5 as I'd need to write a book for you to tell you all the good things here.

Two hints: the grandest Pizza in the Assembly Rooms; and I thnk that El Piano in Grape Lane is a very special veggie tapas restaurant.

Much of York's attractions are year round and all I have told you is within the city walls. Have a lovely time!

Well, theres LOADS too do in York. It's got a very compact city centre, so getting around on foot is the best option. I'll start with attractions:

    York Minster

    National Railway Museum

    Castle Museum

    City Walls

    York Dungeons

    Jorvick Viking Centre

    YorkBoat

    Ghost Walks

    The Shambles

    Yorkshire Wheel

    Places to eat:

Well, theres allsorts, from big chains like Pizza Hut and McDonalds, to more local places, such as Betty's. You'll be spoilt for choice.

Getting out of the city a bit:

Harrogate & Knaresborough - Hourly X54 Transdev Yorkshirexpress or Hourly Train

North YOrk Moors - The Next to Sunday's you can use the Moorsbus to explore the Moors.

Really, you'll not be bored in York, but it depends on what you want to do really.

Try a horse-drawn carriage tour (very entertaining) or a trip on the river. There are also open top bus tours. If your father can walk a mile or so (they go very slowly) you could go on one of the numerous ghost walks in the evening.

There are lots of places to eat. Betty's tea shop is an institution but you would have to be careful when you go there as there are always queues for lunch or afternoon tea. We often go to a Tex-Mex place called Plunkets which is only a few minutes from the Minster.

Most of the sightseeing is relatively accessible from the Minster area. Don't miss the Shambles - an old mediaeval street with old shops.
