There's a reason to why the Final Fantasy series is called Final Fantasy.

Back in 1987 Squaresoft(now known as Square-Enix by merger with another game company named Enix) was doing terrible and was facing bankruptcy. Sakaguchi(a well known man in the video game industry in Japan) was given the task to create the last game Squaresoft would create. He even stated that after this game he would retire.

It just so happened that the game he created, titled "Final Fantasy" was a huge success in Japan, so much so that it was even released in the US 3 years later. The game was so much of a success that it saved Squaresoft from bankruptcy and Sakaguchi didn't retire.

Ironically, the Final Fantasy series has continued on to this day being one the most popular(if not THE most popular) RPG franchises in history.

Hope this answers your question. :)

    I really hope you're joking.

The game was named Final Fantasy because it was going to be the company's last game - they couldn't afford to make anymore. But the success of FF1 kind of saved them, and people wanted more.

They have established a reputable brand name in the gaming community.

You don't see Madden or Warcraft changing its name.
