What do I need to do?

Well I have 2 great danes and a basset hound. My danes and the hound do not like each other. Last night my younger of the 2 danes (14 mo.) attacked the basset hound. My hound is in the clinic now. I asked the vet what he recommends we do with the dane that attacked her and all I got was, "just keep them separated". That's easier said than done being that they are all inside animals. I don't know what provoked the attack at all. We were getting ready for bed and I simply told the basset to get upstairs and the dane went off on her. I did my best to get them separated but by the time I finally got the dane off her the basset hound had 3 holes in her shoulder blades so deep and wide you could see bone. I am now worried that they could attack my children which are 8 and 10 yrs old. I don't want to have to put the dane to sleep but I don't know if any one would be willing to take her knowing she has attacked another animal that bad. What are your thoughts on this and suggestions? I just don't know what to do.

This is really a tough situation. I guess what I would recommend is that if you're worried about the safety of your family having this dog around, contact a great dane rescue in your area or really anywhere. They know the breed better than anyone. They may be willing to rehome the dog for you in a place where it will be the only dog. They can also give you more recommendations as to what to do. Being only 14 months old, it's kind of odd that a dog that young would be dog aggressive. Also, danes have been known for their calm and gentle behavior, especially with children.

Have you tried obedience training? Maybe she's just in need of an outlet. How much exercise do your dogs get? These are all things to take into consideration. Make sure there wasn't anything such as food or toys involved in the attack. I've had my 3 year old dog go after my 14 year old dog because she thought she was going to take her toy.

For the time being, definitely keep them separated. It could just be that your dane isn't comfortable with small animals, which I have seen before in dogs. It could just be a matter of the need for socialization and training. There's always hope and people will do whatever they can to help out situations like this to avoid a dog being euthanized. Unfortunately, if you cannot find any other options and you are still afraid, that will be the only thing you can do.
