How can someone use another person's ID?

I received a V notice today, I had seen a Q yesterday that I knew was a stupid thing so I did not read it, much less answer it. Someone appears to have used my ID and did answer it. I don't know a lot about computers, so I can't figure out how this happened. Is there something I can do to prevent it happening again. This is a serious thing to me, so please try to give helpful answers.

That can happen if somebody knows your password. I suggest to not only change the password, but also your security question and secret answer.

To change or update your Password Question and Secret Answer, send a mail to: my-login-request@yahoo-inc.com.

For security reasons, Yahoo requests that you send this information from the Yahoo! Mail account associated with the Password Question and Secret Answer. For the Subject of the email, type: Password Question and Secret Answer.

In the text of the email, include:

    Your Yahoo! Mail ID.

The ZIP code you gave when you registered for the account (non-U.S. residents, please include country).

    Your birthdate.

The alternate (non- Yahoo!) email address listed for your Yahoo! ID.

Your current Password Question and Secret Answer (exactly as you entered them when you registered).

Your new Password Question and Secret Answer.

Click "my account" at the top of this page, enter your current password, click "continue". Click the "change password" link near the top. Once again enter your current password. Type in the new one, confirm by typing it again. Don't forget to save the new settings! Note: your new password is valid for all personalized Yahoo services like YA, messenger, e-mail...

You can choose the 'permanently offline' under the stealth setting option in Yahoo Messenger and also put the id on ignore. That should be good enough.
