Good luck. Before you get started, understand most photographer don't hire interns simply because they find it easier to do freelance things without assistance. But if you check into studios, they might be more willing. But you never know, you could get lucky and find an awesome photographer who would be more than happy to let you intern.

I would start by finding local photographers in your area. There will be some especially because a lot do senior portraits. Depending on what area your interested in, find them in your area. You can also google, such as "wedding photographers in san francisco" and many websites have databases that give you contact information.

As far as freelancing on your own, most people would prefer an experienced photographer. So start small. Ask family and friends to let you photograph important events, even if your not their main photographer. Don't charge to be there, but if they wish to buy your prints, charge for that.

Next, I would set up a website of some sort showing off your images. Make fliers to place in local business directing people to your website. hair salons are helpful because of weddings and proms and such. make you sure you talk with an owner or something first though.

It will help if you got an internship because of the experience, but dont let that dictate your dreams. Just try to find ways to get your name out to people. Good luck!
