My dog has lost a lot of weight. Help?

He's a pit bull. He's 5 years old and has always been pretty fat, about 60 pounds. At my old house, there was no fenced in yard, so he stayed inside most of the time. I usually kept dog food down so he could eat whenever, because he always eats a little bit at a time. When I moved a few months ago, I started keeping him outside. I took him to the vet in August to get his shots updated. They told me that he had hook worms and gave me some medicine for him. But, there was no difference in his weight. Since then, I have been giving him his medicine every 2 weeks, and I have only been giving him one bowl of food a day. He constantly runs back and forth when he is outside, so he has been getting a lot more exercise than before. Today, I noticed that he has lost a lot of weight. I'm not sure if it's because he's been getting a lot more exercise and a good amount of food, or if there is something wrong. Does anybody have any opinions?

Sometimes moving does have an affect on dogs makes them little more nervous in strange territory, but from what you have described the exercise and less food sounds like it has allot to do with his weight loss. But if your really nervous about it i would talk to your vet and see where his weight should be and if he is in the normal range it will put your mind at ease and give you a weight mark to go by if he goes below it! Hope everything goes well with you and your dog good luck.

i don't think you need to take your dog to the vet just yet. it doesn't sound like he's *drastically* lost weight. if you can feel your dogs ribs but not see them, he is good. if you CAN see his ribs, he needs to bulk up a little. try increasing his food intake and/or reducing his exercise time.

i have a very slim shepherd/lab who has always been so. i recently noticed i COULD see his ribs when he moved a certain way, so i increased the amount of food, as well as making sure he was getting extra protein, and he got back to normal in only a week or two. if that doesn't help, yes, i would think a vet visit is in order.

also, since your dog was just at the vet and is on medication, there is certainly no reason you can't call your vet and say, listen, could this weight loss have to do with the hook worms/medication, the new diet/exercise or something ELSE and should i be concerned? it will save you time and money and your vet owes you an answer.

It could be a combination of the hookworms, the medicine, the amount of exercise he is getting, maybe not getting enough food intake, but I would take him back to the vet and let your vet know what you said in your question. The more info you give him the better idea he will have of what could be causing the weight loss. He can also draw bloodwork to check his kidney/bladder/sugar levels which are a good tool to diagnose with. Best Wishes!!

you need to increase his food to 2 times a day, lots of water and some treats thrown in,he's on medication and getting more exercise than he was before so yeah he's going to lose weight.take him to the vet and make sure nothing else is going on as dogs pick up more things outside than in.I hope he has a dog house if he's outside all the time and be careful of mosquito's as they carry heart worm virus.
