Taking the MSF class is the first step to getting a license.

Basically, look at the www sites for different manufactures of motorcycles to get the general idea of what they have to offer - major suppliers are Harley Davidson/Buell, Honda Motor sports, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Victory, Ducati, Triumph, BMW - and probably several more that I can't remember.

Don't buy a motorcycle until after you take the class.

There are a couple basic styles of motorcycles.

Sport bike - what you call a crotch rocket

Cruiser bike - one with an upright sitting position, generally speaking the feet of the rider are forward or even with their knees.

touring bike - one intended for long distance riding with "luggage" capacity - usually a beefed up cruiser, although there is the sport touring sub-category. Touring bikes tend to be expensive and very heavy.

dirt bike - by definition has no headlight, therefore it can not be legally used on the street. Also the easiest of all bikes to ride.

dual purpose bike - from a high level, these are dirt bikes that can also be used on the road. The BMW R1200GS Adventure is good example.

Suggest you go to a few dealers, sit on a few models. When you get your license you can go on test rides, which may only be offered occasionally. Don't expect to walk into a dealer and be able to take a bike for test ride, some have demo bikes. Some will wait for the manufacturer to bring around a sample of demo bikes and then offer test rides at an open house event. You can also go to motorcycle "trade" events - like rally's where the manufacturers often offer demo rides.

Once you pick a style that you like, buy a used version of that style to learn on. Odds are pretty good that you will drop your first bike - best not to learn on a brandy new one. By drop it, I mean when standing still, i.e. trying to turn it around in a tight spot or something.

    Good luck with it.

I agree with D'oh. Take the MSF before doing anything else. You may find you don't like bikes.

Also, you may consider a scooter to be a good first bike. They can be practical as they have storage and are very nimble in heavyTrafficc situations. I would recommend something the 150-250cc range to ensure you can stay in the traffic flow in all situations. Some MSF courses have scooters so you could try one there.

Go for a MSF course on your local community college or other places that offer. Then you can decide after that. You will learn and ride in the class, so it will be easier to decide.
