Learning to read notes for my guitar, question.?
I'm learning to play my guitar and to read notes I have this book that have the notes to different songs. My question is, if I write the note letter over top of each note will the hinder me in someway from actually learning to read the notes. If I keep writing each note letter over top of the note? It has been helping me alot doing it that way. I just started playing like a month ago and I can play jingle bells, Amazing grace and a few other small tunes. Thanks in advance.

If you are only looking at the letters when you play it, then yes. I used to do that for piano, and all I learned was to memorize the songs. If you want to be able to site read, you should try without the letters.

You do not NEED to learn to read music (you can use TAB and listen to the song), but you do need to learn some theory. There are many famous musicians that could not read AT ALL, let alone music. My guitar teacher in HS gave me a quick list of those that could not read music and some that could not read at all--Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Django Reinhardt, and Irving Berlin come to mind--at least for not reading music (as of 1985 lol). Without at least some theory, you will have a lot of trouble with playing as you will not have the concept of scales, keys, or chord theory (in other words what notes and chords sound good together and when). I wish I learned more of this earlier! "I just want to play" takes a lot of work! Play well and be able to create anything original without theory? Your teacher is absolutely right!

umm no it shouldnt because you still know the notes by writing them down it just makes it easier to go to that note on the fret board. but you should try tabs to they are fun to learn with on some songs. a good website is http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/
