Why is it considered to be a good thing to be a literary snob?
I am weary of the number of people on here saying idiotic things like "ooh, you shouldn't be reading Harry Potter or Twilight, you should be reading Good Literature."
Rubbish. People should read what they want to read. A good book is a book that you can't put down, and I couldn't put down Harry Potter or Twilight while I was reading them.
Do people who prefer 'classics' to books by the likes of J K Rowling and Stephanie Meyer really regard themselves as superior beings?

You know, I find this question very interesting.
And I know what you mean. It really annoys me when people are like that; not just with classics, but either think they are superior because they prefer harry potter or twilight. I loved both of them, though I prefered twilight slightly, but I think a lot of the time people who read classics think that they are better because they think that they are right, and other people are wrong. Like you might think you are superior if you like older music to people who like modern music, because it makes you unique, different, and you may regard the rest of it as prap. (My made up word, meaning modern crap.) I agree with you that people should read what they want; so it also irriates me when people say the same about classics; 'classics are boring and stupid,' is as irritating to me as 'classics are the best books in the world and anyone who disagrees is stupid.' Becaues it implies the same thing; if you don't agree with that person, you are boring/stupid/unoriginal, which is completely not true. Being 'well-read' doesn't mean you have read all of the classics; though that can be considered being well-read, you can still be well-read and prefer modern things to classics, as long as you read books, you are well-read. Part of being good at english/reading/whatever, is being able to appreciated different things; being able to read Shakespeare and see the positives of it, even if you don't necessarily agree with them personally, yourself, and being able to read other stuff as well. This doesn't mean you can't like and dislike certain stuff; it just means you can see it from other people's point of veiw; empathy. So, yes, in my opioion, it shouldn't matter whether you like Twilight, or Harry Potter, or Jane austen, or all of them! It is the same with the whole current Twilight vs. Harry Potter war - it is unncecessary, and just kind of mean in places; it reminds me of when I was a little kid and I loved my scene dolls, I would go on Amazon.com to look at them and there would be loads of mean reveiws on people who liked brats on there, and vice versa, when they hadn't even tried it.
In short: Why can't we be friends?

I think it is considered a good thing to be well read, but being a snob of any stripe "ain't so good".
I've read most of the classics and found them enjoyable, educational and rewarding. However I have no problem picking up a mystery or some other "low brow" tome and getting completely engrossed.
Enjoy what you enjoy. I do.

You absolutely should read what you want to...but you should also give the classics a try first. There are numerous benefits to reading classic novels. You can expand your vocabulary and writing skills, you can know first hand the stories that many a new book, movie, song, etc. alludes to.
Balance is everything. Some of the classics are amazing and it would be a shame if people didn't give them a chance.

As long as you enjoy what you're reading who cares who wrote it or what type of book it is.
I hate when people act like "Book Snobs"!

Hmm...I agree with you. People really should read what they want, and if classics are what some people like instead of Twilight or Harry Potter, than they shouldn't ruin the books of authors the other people like. Not all books are classics, really.

This is precisely why people do judge. Nobody says that Rowling isn't a good read but that is not literature. It is a book. It is like comparing "Days of Our Lives" to a major motion picture to put it poorly. Reading a lot does not mean you are well read. Rowlings writing is a great read but it doesn't capture the thoughts and emotions of people in this generation it is all magic. Read "The Jungle" and you may see the difference. All snobs are retarded no matter what form they take.
