Should people support what is right, or what benefits them?

What is right is a very gray area, but my question remains. Should you support/vote for/do what is right or what is best for you?

My knee-jerk answer is this: People "should" support what is right, of course. However, we human beings have a way of twisting our thinking, consciously or not, so that what is best for us and what is "right" end up being the same thing (whether they really are, or not).

Here is my "Devil's Advocate" answer, though: similar to Maslow's hierarchy, there is a hierarchy of laws. There are society's laws, and then there are "higher laws" which govern our actions regardless of how the laws of society tell us to act. If one argued that one of these higher laws was the law of survival, then people should support whatever ensures their survival, regardless of the "rightness" of it.

Good question - made me think!

    Excellent question.

People SHOULD, as human beings, support what is right and what will benefit society as a whole.

However, most people are selfish, and will support with benefits them.

Very good question! Most people will do whats best for them. Very few people look ahead and try to see the future for whats best in the long run.

I say do whats right for the majority and you will find that you will do whats right for you as well.

I thought they were the same thing. Doing the right thing prevents anxiety, illness, trouble from others, etc.
