How to get a career in college football coaching?
ok im 13 and I want to do something in coaching as my career. I played football in 5th grade but only 5th grade. now I basically know more about football plays, coaches, coaching styles, and formations than anyone in the school (including the football players). My plan is to go to college, get a degree in teaching, while teaching i want to become a football coach. I am thinking about started in high school as an assistant than working my way up to a coordinater than a coach then a college coach. But my real question is do you have to play football in HS or college to be able to become a head coach or a coach of some degree
***Sry this is so long

First of all...you have a LONG way to go before you know A LOT about football. I'm a college football player and everything takes a step up when you get to this game. Granted, I play defense but the playcalling, formations, and checks get a lot more complicated.
It sounds like you have a good plan. Playing high school and college is really the only way to get noticed and get real experiance. Some people when they're done playing college football stay on as graduate assistants and get their start there. That's the quickest way to the top. It's hard for high school coaches to jump to the college level. Most of them start out there because they know people.

Most coaches at the high school, college and pro levels all have played football beyond a year. You will need a degree, most likely in physical education if you are not going to actually play the game at a higher level. This certainly is not impossible and you have a plan which is unusual for your young age. Remember though that you do not know more about football than anyone in your school. I am 44 and a mom, you should talk to a football coach for your middle school or high school. There are many students who act as equipment managers or water managers for the team. This will provide an opportunity for you to be around it and determine if you still want to do it. It will also expose you to what really goes on before, during and after the game. By the way good luck, you can do it, you may have to go about it a little differently than someone who has played most of their life.

It's not required to play high school ball, but it certainly helps out a lot. Coaching lil league, then moving up from there is the most solid corse of action. High School coaching is where your oppurtunities open up. If you do REALLY good, state title, something like that, you may get an oppurtunity for an offensive coordinator, def, QB coach, line coach, something like that.
If you're not gonna play football in high school, hands on experience is the only way you'll ever become a coach.

Sounds like you are on the right track. I would go to your high school coach and let him know your intentions. He will feel flattered and I am sure will help you out.
You should probably look into majoring in some kind of sports training in college. I would also ask the coach what degree he recommends.
Good luck and try and get a job with the best team in the nation - THE Ohio State Univeristy.
