Is John McCain a 'throw away' candidate?
I ask this question - not to belittle the man or the party - but to understand the choice of their nomination....
Prior to each party's nominations race, it was widely believed that the Democrats should be a shoe in to win the White House. With the mess that the country got into with GW - recognized even by his own party - is it possible that the Republicans saw that they probably wouldn't win in 2008. So - is it possible that John McCain is just a throw away nominee - an old guy that they threw into the mix, knowing that he wouldn't win? Because really - he's hardly a rainmaker or any kind of opponent to either Hillary or Obama - so did they just toss him in, and will wait for 2012 to bring out their big guns?
Robert R - thats what I thought too - certainly about Obama in 2004. But, honestly, do you really think the Palin pick was a similar move? Do you really believe her to be the future of the Republican party? Perhaps, in the beginning, this was the hope. But the blush is definitely off that rose now! When Obama spoke at the DNC in 2004 - he was respected highly by both parties and didn't make the same kinds of gaffs. Please tell me the Repubes don't honestly see this woman as a serious contender in the future.....

Excellent perception. This a repeat performance of the historic Vietnam Watergate period. President Gerald Ford is the Republican Party sacrificial candidate of 1976. General dissatisfaction with the performance of President Richard M. Nixon, appointment of Vice President Gerald Ford, Resignation of President Nixon, and the Presidential Pardon of Richard M. Nixon by President Gerald Ford made the campaign of then Governor James (Jimmy) Carter somewhat easier.
Many of the activities and events focusing upon the campaign of Senator John McCain suggest that the Republican Party is throwing the election for strategic purposes. The next president will be responsible for the morass of complex overspending and the disappearing "Billions".
A sitting President does not have the luxury of blaming another administration for problems. It is the responsibility of the current President to perform in the best interests of the nation.
Senator McCain and Governor Palin are more entertainment then candidates.

I think so. I think Rove's plan was to sacrifice a presidential candidate that he didn't like very much in the first place in an election cycle that he knew the Republicans couldn't win, and trot out Sarah Palin to get her vetted and exposed for the 2012 election, in the same way the Democrats did with Obama in 2004.
Source(s): None. But it's been my pet theory since around January, and so far it seems to be holding up. - 1 decade ago
Fully microwaveable and biodegradable. They have no big guns. In 2016 Biden will win the election and be Prez for another 8 years. The Reps need to plan for 16 years down the road, not 8. It's doubtful many of the ones in congress now will still be here in 16 years if current trends continue.

This actually is a rumor I heard when he got nominated. If you recall, they were nasty to McCain in 2000. Also, he isn't the most popular Senator in that party. I think the Repubs do not care if he wins or lose.

As much as i hate to agree with you,i thought this election was rigged the second he introduced his running mate.I'm still voting for him because i like his honesty and policies much better then Obama. This is the first time since i have been voting for 20 years i felt that this was a settup election.Do it,get it over with, move on.

Is Barrack Hussein Obama getting a giant Affirmative Action pass since no one wants to reveal in the media about his affiliation to a man akin to Timothy McVeigh of his day. Or speak about his 20 year attendance of a racist American hating church. Or how he got a sweat-heart deal on his house using a now convicted criminal Resco. The Obama people harassed and blocked the only press person willing to look at the public information in a public library and demand his firing for looking into Obama's relationship with William Ayers.

No, I do not think so.
McCain was selected by his supporters during the primaries.
It is just that the Republicans have a very difficult time coming up with quality candidates.

They didn't "throw him in". He was selected by millions of Republican voters in their primaries. As far as Republicans go, he was the best of the bunch.
As for 'throw away', of course he is. He's already lived his 9 lives, and is pretty close to the end of an American male's life expectancy. He won't be around for the next election. Not that I wish him ill.

That would explain why they picked the 2nd worst Republican they could come up with.
