puppy just got spayed, question! help please!?
I just got my puppy back a few hours ago from the vet, and she had surgery today and got spayed... Theres a question i thought of AFTER i had left the vet, i tried calling and they were already closed.
My puppy is every once in awhile, licking the insision area, is this okay? I just want to make sure so the rest of the night i can know to watch for that as well.
thanks! :)

Did he give you an Elizabethan Collar to prevent suture licking (its a cone)?
If she licks the sutures, she can remove the glue, cause infection, or rip open the sewing. If possible, try to call your vet and ask for an E-Collar to prevent her from licking the sutures for a couple of days.

I'm not sure what to advise, because our little dog was kept overnight and then the vet put one of those cones on her when she came home. I took it off that same evening and she was fine, but while the site was still really hurting it was best to have it on her to keep her from licking.
Maybe you could tie a big bandage around her so that she can't get to the incision? Just make sure it's not too tight. Then, I would call the vet in the morning, if she is still wanting to lick the incision.
Good for you getting your little girl spayed! I wish there were many more responsible dog owners out there.

It isn't going to hurt her unless they put medicine on it that is harmful if swallowed (i don't think they do?) or if she opens the incision by licking it. Another problem is that her tongue may have natural bacteria that could get into the incision and cause problems. It isn't a major deal if she sneaks in the occasional lick, but it is best if try to keep her from doing it to avoid any possibility of infection.

It is not okay for the pup to lick it too much. Dogs have healing stuff in there salivia, (so Ive heard from a good source), so I cant imagine that a little will harm it. I am surprised the vet did not mention that.

Your vet didn't give you an e-collar? I would have insisted on one. A few extra $$$, but it's money well spent, you wouldn't be worrying about your dog licking the stitches. I've tried things like t-shirts, just don't work like the collars.

You shouldn't let her do that it can tear out the stitches if she does it enough. The vet should have given you an e-collar You can use that if not then get an old t-shirt and cut it to fit your pup so that it will cover the stitches. then she won't be able to lick it!
And GOOD FOR YOU GETTING YOUR PUP FIXED!!!!!!

I agree that crating her or preserving her on a leash for some days is a stable theory until eventually the wound starts therapeutic, yet I even have additionally got here across that as quickly as my pup starts going nuts interior the domicile, if I carry an user-friendly instruction consultation, like coaching her to take a seat down, stay, down, etc. with stable treats for each time she is real (for sure) looks to at present calm and tire her out. stable success and instantaneous restoration for the pup :).

If she licks it, it will get infected. My Labrador did the same thing, I had to go back to the vet and he had to get a shot to fix the infection. You have to keep her from doing it no matter how hard it is.

The site will be itchty, but do not let her lick it because the stithes could tear. You do not want dog gutts and a dead dog waiting for you in the basement.

your puppy is doing normal puppy things after her surgery. try to distract her from licking the incision site. It's like after we get stitches or a scrap, in the healing process, it itches. unless directed by the vet, rub some ointment on it, like hydrocorasone or any antibacterial ointment but not too much.
