What books can I read as an adult to brush up on my U.S. history?

Unfortunatly I wasnt all that interested when I was learning it in high school, but I would like to find a book that will teach me what I missed in history class. And PLEASE...I do not want a book that is going to tell me schools are wrong and government is corrupt and all that. I just want to learn what they would teach in school.

There is a great series of books by a woman named Joy Hakim. She does a splendid job of giving details in a very user-friendly, readable way. The series is called, A History of US and, so far, it is a 10 volume set. HOWEVER, you can buy them as individual titles.

I have been reading them for the pure enjoyment of learning American history... kind of like you, not interested when in school, but more interested as an adult.

Here is a link to the set on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/History-US-10-set-Us/dp/0195...

There are pictures and all sorts of quotes and great treasures in these volumes. I highly recommend them.

Also, another really great little book was A Photobiography of Abraham Lincoln, by Russell Freedman. A lot of good information about Abraham Lincoln.

And here is another little volume you might want to check out... I don't know if you can read this little booklet in its entirety at this site or not; if not, I am sure it has probably been reissued a number of times:

Common Sense, by Thomas Paine, (1776)

Yes, it says you can read the entire work on one page.

    Hope this helps.

    Roots by Alex Haley

Historical fiction is a really good way to begin.

The emancipators wife---don't remember the author, about Mary Lincoln

Book titled 1898, gives a snapshot of what is going on in that year alone.

Go to your local book store and go to the History section and find U.S. history, that way you can find something you like etc. I would go with U.S. History for Dummies, no offense by the name, but they're good books for learning the basics on things, i have at least 7 for Dummies, books myself. I'm not sure if they have U.S. history, but chances are they do, also go to wikipedia.org and search U.S. or U.S. history, and you'll probably get the basics.
