What would you do with 26 extra days a year?

Stop watching so much TV. I asked how many hours per day people watched TV. Fourteen people answered. The average time was 1.75 hours per day which equals about 26 days. That's over THREE WEEKS! Feel like you are too busy for this and that? Stop spending 12+ hours per week infront of the TV.
So, what would you do with this extra time?

I'd be collect two extra paychecks. That would totally rock.

The number 365.26 has some validity, but in an obscure way. The year that makes sense for the calendar is one that keeps the seasons in sync -- for instance, the vernal equinox should occur about the same time each year and shouldn't drift over the centuries. This is called a tropical year (defined as the period between vernal equinoxes): tropical year = 365.242190 days The ideal calendar would be arranged so we have an average of 365.242190 days in a year. The Gregorian calendar (that we use) has an average of 365.2425 days in a year, so it's very close, but it will drift by one day every 3326 years. (The old Soviet Union actually came up with a calendar that was slightly better than the Gregorian, so they could say they had a better calendar than the U.S.) The ideal calendar would not be designed to compromise with any other type of year; the only goal is to match the tropical year as well as possible. The only compromise is that it must be simple enough for people to comprehend it. But astronomers also talk about several other types of years. For instance, a "sidereal year" is the time it takes for the earth and sun to line up again with the same spot on the celestial sphere. An "anomalistic year" is defined as the period between perihelions (i.e., when the earth is closest to the sun). They differ from a tropical year because of minor perturbations. (An ideal two-body system wouldn't have these different types of years.) These years have the following lengths: sidereal year = 365.256363 days anomalistic year = 365.259635 days These numbers, when rounded, are the same as the number given by giantpandadog; but they are not the numbers you want to use to create a civil calendar. One more item: Take the difference between a tropical year and a sidereal year, and divide it into the length of a tropical year. The result is about 25800; this is how many years it will take before the number of tropical and sidereal years differ by one. Look familiar? This is the period of the precession of the equinoxes -- i.e., how long it takes for the earth's pole to complete one turn as it wobbles about the axis of the ecliptic, and how long it takes between eras when Polaris is the north star.
