Just before having 2 put an old/sick pet 2 sleep, is it beneficial 2 give a dose of benadryl 2 spare fear?

My friend just had to put her dog to sleep because she was sick and old. My friend was soooo upset about the dog because of her fear of going to the vet. It made me wonder if one can calm an animal by using benadryl to make them very sleepy before taking them in so as to not have the pet feeling fear as the last thing they feel before being put to sleep.

Usually when the dogs are so sick that they need to be put down, they are ready and not as upset as they usually would be going to the vet. I have had to put three dogs down in the past few years that were very senior dogs in kidney failure and one with a spinal injury and they were very calm because they knew where they were going and why. Animals can sense these things.

If the dog is still that nervous, the vet can prescribe medicine for the owner to give the dog prior to the visit to relax it, but the vet would need to do this so there would not be any problems with the medicine when they put the dog to sleep. You don't want a reaction between the two medications that could cause seizures or something like that. When our dogs were put to sleep our whole family was there with them and we held them and said good-by before they got the shot.

After the doctor gave them the shot in their front leg they just closed their eyes and their breathing got slower and slower and they were like they went to sleep and they stopped breathing. It was very peaceful and very sad. Each time we had them cremated and brought them home in their urns.

    i think that's a great question

it's something i would ask the vet tho

imagine if you gave the dog (or any animal) wrong medicine and they started getting REALLY sick and they were suffering?

man, i can't even type it or think about it without cringing

so i'd ask the vet, i am SURE if they pet is on the was to be put down the vet would have some suggestions

Maybe you should ask a vet. Human drugs may react differently in animals. Sometimes Benadryl can make people more anxious, such as old people and crazy people. It doesn't always have a sedative effect.

why would you give them an allergy medecine to make then calm? benedryl is given to dogs to calm allergies, and it can make them sleepy, but that is not always the effect it has... when an animal is put to sleep they are given medication that make them tired then surpress thier breathing - so they go to sleep - benedryl does not really make any sense in this equation - it would be like asking if you should give benedryl to a man/woman about to be executed on death row...

Sure - but I might ask your vet for something a little... stronger.

I hate to say it, but at this point, giving something that might be detrimental isn't going to be a problem - the only concern is his mental comfort.

i believe if an animal is ready to go, it will not put up a fight.

however it is a kind though.
