The best approach is to become skilled at both shots, as well as slice. There is a time and place for all shots in tennis, and you will be a better player if you learn them all and when to apply them.

If both are equally consistent and have good placement, then I would say a flat forehand is better, because it is faster. But, the topspin forehand is usually more consistent, and would be a better weapon at the recreational levels. The topspin forehand needs to be hit deep, unless you are hitting one with severe angle.

I think you should involve a little of both. What i mean by that is use heavy topspin to move the player around or keep him far behind the baseline etc. but when when you get a short ball, if its high enough and close to the net, smack it flat.
Also, if you're looking for consistency, use topspin, if you're looking for more power, use topspin.
hope i helped

flats are pretty good when ur a begginer, but as u advance, u probably want to do topspins, they go faster and bounce higher as well, the more spin u put in the better. although falts are very inportant , it's very rare u have to use it once u learn topspin.

i think it would depend on what surface u are playing on, and what part of the court u are in, and who u are playing..
if you are playing on a hardcourt, i think hitting flatter in general would be better, that way u can put away more winners, and hit the ball cleaner..
if u are playing on clay, hitting with more topspin would be better, that way the ball lands in more, there is more consistency and the surface will create alot of bad bounces for the other player...
