Why are the center blocks of a Lincoln Log pattern always suppose to be red?

    It represents the chimney, I think. Or the "heart" of the home.

    But you don't HAVE to make that square red if you have another color you'd rather use.

    They were commonly red, to represent the hearth or heart of the home, but other traditions existed, too. Sometimes the center was yellow or even orange, to represent the fire in the home chimney. A log cabin quilt with black centers was a mourning quilt.

    Nowadays, they can be made with whatever color takes your fancy.
