Is it appropriate to wear a political t-shirt to work on Casual Friday?

My employer allows us to wear jeans, t-shirts, and tennis shoes to work every Friday. I won't disclose whose t-shirt I would like to wear but is it appropriate to wear a political t-shirt to work? I have worn my Bob Marley t-shirt to work and everyone loved it. I am guessing that politics is a bit more sensitive. I would love feedback, no stupid remarks please.

Update:

The company I work for is pretty small, we do real estate. I work in the 'basement' with about 5 people. It's not a big corporation like Wachovia or anything.

Update 2:

The t-shirt has the candidate's face on it, their name, and 'For President'. lol

Although it's casual Fridays I would still take into account that you do not want to offend anyone. If you get on well with everyone and they have a lighthearted attitude then wear it. But I think you know already it's a little risky to do it. Wear the shirt outside of work.

I know a girl that used to come to my work on casual Friday in her sorts, short shorts with a pair of tights and her boots, with a casual t-shirt sometimes no cardigan. She did it to shock and some people started to complain.

Just dress casual but keep it simple no drama if you think it may cause that.

At the same time if you are trying to make a statement then do it but remember that even after you have worn it once people know your views they break the topic up days if not months later, as a talking point you know people like to do that at times just know the consequence if you decide to do it.

If it is acceptable to your employer than go ahead. BUT, keep this in mind, people may challenge your opinion. If you are not prepared to have a political discussion with your coworkers, then don't wear it.

Also, if your opinion is not the "popular" one of the office, wearing that t-shirt may cause people to not take you seriously as a professional or to make judegments about you. Right or wrong, that is how people work.

Choose carefully. Personally, I'd go with something less controversial at work.

I'm personally opposed to casual Fridays, or casual any days. Most companies conduct the same business on Fridays as they do any other day of the week, and I think everyone should dress appropriately every day.

But, why are you asking this question on the internet, where you may get an answer that could cause you to lose your job? Your supervisor, or the person you report to at your job would be the correct person to direct this question to.

Political T shirts are considered casual wear because the root word in casual is cause and politics is a cause.

We wear dress clothng when it is called for and sleepwear when it is called for. We wear casual wear when there is no reason to wear anything else.

    So go for it.

Now if you work at Republican Headquarters you might not want to wear your Obama tee but anywhere else should be OK.

If you are not sure, bring a second less political shirt to wear if there are objections, but in a free society there should not be any.

  • Very inappropriate. It creates a hostile workplace and makes people uncomfortable. It also invites debate which leads to fighting.

I went to the integrity hotline of my company to quit forcing Fox News down our throats in the lunchroom. It was impossible to turn off, mute, or turn down. It took repeated calls until the poor hotline guy said he wanted to come to our building with a sledgehammer if they wouldn't take it off already, but after a couple months I got the policy changed. I suggest going through some kind of channel similar to the integrity hotline to deal with this. Hopefully you can let HR know that this is a problem anonymously, or you're going to catch hell. Good luck.

well i don't think it's the best idea!

more so if you meet people or work with customers!

if your among co workers and you don't know them personally enought to wear a conversational peice so much!

bob Marley is not vote for so in so!

as you don't want to disclose whose t-shirt on here why would you do so at work!

this is more relaxed then work!

Snuggies are an insult to druids everywhere. Plus, I think they have an open back. You may want to wear those pants. As for the BeDazzler, not a bad idea. You could also get some iron-on patches and designs.

Unless you work in politics, it is considered unprofessional to bring up politics at work. If you were working, say, in the back at McDonald's you might be able to get away with it, but real estate is a profession so I wouldn't do it.

No, a political shirt would not be appropriate. It is best not to wear it to work in order to avoid confrontation. I, personally, wouldnt care, but others do.
